MEDIUM: My portraits are combination of pencil and charcoal in black-and-white on white acid-free 100% rag surface Crescent illustration board. I create my portraits 100% by hand from your treasured digital or original photographs.
PHOTO SIZE: I can draw from any size photograph. However, it is important to know that the smaller the photograph, the less detail I can see. The less detail I can see, the less detail I can include in your portrait. Wallet sized photos are OK but not recommended because I will not be able to see as much detail. 3x5, 4x6, and 5x7 photos are perfect.
PORTRAIT SIZE: Please refer to my price list for standard sizes. 14x18 image area with a 1 border is what I call my standard size because it is the most popular. When framed with a 3 mat, this size fits nicely into a 20x24 frame. I can also do square sizes or any other size you would like, but I will be glad to make your portrait to fit into a standard size frame so that you can frame it yourself instead of paying for custom-framing. Unfortunately, I do not offer framing services at this time, but may do so in the future.
SUBJECTS: All subjects are welcome and I have drawn them all - babies, children, adults, couples, pets, and architectural structures (family homes, office buildings, churches, etc.)
BACKGROUNDS: I prefer using empty or cloudy backgrounds when drawing people or pets so that the focus remains on the subject. Most commonly I will leave a plain white background because I feel this puts more focus on the subject. Detailed backgrounds take away from the subject when creating charcoal portraits of people. I can include backgrounds if they are important to you, or place your subjects on different backgrounds (photograph of the alternate backgrounds must be furnished).
COMBINING PHOTOS: I can place multiple subjects together from separate photographs. It is preferable that the light is coming from the same angle in each photograph so that all of the people in the portrait will appear to be in same place at the same time.
COPYRIGHTED PHOTOS: I cannot draw from professional copyrighted photographs because it is illegal without permission from the photographer. If you are in the Baton Rouge area and would like a professional photographer to take a photo for me to use, please visit www.susanmclin.com. Susan and I will work together to get the perfect shot for me to draw. I can accept other copywrited professional photographs only as supporting photos to better see a feature that was not visible in your own photo, or to get a better feeling of the persons unique expressions. Your best bet is to catch your subjects on your own camera playing, laughing, or enjoying a moment. Non-posed photographs usually make the best portraits, as smiles are more natural and I can capture the true essence of the individual. Natural, unposed shots make the best charcoal portraits, especially when working with infants and children.
DELIVERY TIME: For portraits up to 2 people on up to 14x18 board, please allow 14 days for the creation of your portrait, plus shipping time, which adds 1 - 5 business days inside the continental U.S. via UPS Ground. I generally complete them sooner, but this will depend on my current schedule. Rush orders may also available by request. Larger, more detailed portraits may or may not require additional time to create, also depending on my current schedule and workload. Please ask specifically if you are interested in turn time on a larger/more complex portrait.
SHIPPING: UPS Ground shipping in the continental United States is free Expedited shipping or shipping outside the U.S. is available at an additional charge. If you are in the Baton Rouge area, I can also deliver to you at no charge.

If you are not satisfied and do not want the portrait, I will not ship the portrait and there will be no charge. Payment is due upon seeing a photo of your portrait, and I will ship as soon as payment is received.
